Andy, thank you very much for your comments and for the link you provide with the information on the Kaneko family and their link to Her Father`s Daughter. I will add the link to my text.
Is it possible that there were mutliple sources for the character? I mean, the fact that Nemoto, who by then was already internationally well known, HAD attended junior high in California as an adult.Couldnt that precedent have given Stratton-Porter the idea of making the A student an older man, and the agent of an up and coming foreign power to boot.

I cant help but feel the connection. To tell the truth, last year , when I first started studying about Nemoto, there was an article in the New York review of books which mentioned the school student in his 30`s.

Please tell me what you think. Could the valedictorian elemement be based on Kaneko, while the age element is based Nemoto`s story?

Im sure the readers of Tsukublog would also be interested in the story of Yun Ch`i-Ho. I certainly would be.

Hope to hear more from you

Interesting article about Sho Nemoto. I have done some work on Korean students in the United States, during the same time, especially Yun Ch'i-ho, whose life's trajectory is somewhat similar to Sho Nemoto's. However, it seems unlikely that Sho Nemoto was the inspiration for the character in Her Father's Daughter. This website offers a more likely explanation: http://aar.ucr.edu/HerFathersDaughter/index.html.
