Good option for souvenirs for your home

There may be people who are going back to their home countries during the spring vacation.

If you are one of those people, you might want to think about getting some Japanese style tiny goods for souvenirs for 100 yen!

There is a Japanese style goods section named "和風空間(Wafu-Kukan (=Japanese style space))" in the 100yen shop called the DAISO on the basement floor in DayzTown. They sell many kinds of tiny goods there, such as ukiyoe postcards, paper fans, rice bowls, tea cups, lucky-cat dolls, store curtains, etc. I believe the prices are reasonable and these items should be a nice conversation starter with your family and friends in your home country.

Have a nice stay at home!

Write for TsukuBlog

TsukuBlog is a team blog and it benefits from the input of its diverse members. If you are interested in providing useful and entertaining information to the residents of Tsukuba, please contact us to join our team!

Contribute a Picture to TsukuBlog

We have a category called photoblogging that we use when we post pictures that give our readers a sense of what Tsukuba is like. If you have a photo that you would like to share with the Tsukuba community, please contact us.

If you have a large number of photos and you would like to share them all, please upload them to a photo sharing site like Flickr or Picasa Web Albums and then send us the link. We will feature your album in a blog post and add it to our Photo Albums page.

If you are really ambitious, you could provide us with a header photo for the site. The dimensions of the photo should be W=760px, H=175px, but we can crop it to the right size if you are not sure how to do that. Feel free to add a title to the photo (preferably including where in Tsukuba it was taken) and a note to say who took the photo.

Unless we get inundated with photos and can’t keep up with them, we will do our best to post the photos that we receive in a timely way. The editors reserve the right to refuse to post any submitted photos to the blog, but our basic policy is to reflect the spirit of community, so unless there is a very good reason, we will post whatever we get.

We look forward to your contributions!

Tsukuba Orientation Seeking Volunteers

A Tsukuba Orientation for Foreign Residents is going to be held in April!

Please see the details below (or on our website) and consider volunteering to participate in the discussions that will shape this important event!
Tsukuba Orientation

  • Date: April 28, 2007
  • Time: 12:30 to 4pm
  • Place: Tsukuba Capio

Tsukuba will hold its first ever orientation for foreign residents on April 28, 2007 at Tsukuba Capio with the cooperation of Tsukuba City Hall, Alien Times, and other local organizations. We are working with various individuals and organizations in the Tsukuba community to offer an event that will help newcomers to our city learn important information about living in Tsukuba.
Schedule

The schedule will be decided by the Tsukuba Orientation Committee in consultation with the foreign population. We are hoping to offer several seminars on various aspects of life in Tsukuba, including information that is relevant to students, researchers, teachers, and others.

Seeking Volunteers

We are still in the planning stages of this event and we are looking for volunteers to help us make the event meaningful and memorable. If you have ideas about how we can make this event a success, please consider joining the Tsukuba Orientation Committee.

Due to the busy nature of our volunteers, we will likely have an initial meeting and then conduct most of our organizing by email and telephone. If you are interested in helping, either by attending our planning meeting or joining our mailing list and participating in discussions, please send an email to the following address.

Flag Football

A mixed group of foreigners and Japanese are getting together in Katsuragi Park at 1:00 pm on March 4th (weather permitting) to play Flag Football. They've done it before, they'll do it again, and it's lots of fun. If you're free, please join them. There's no tackling involved, and no prior experience needed. It's simplified American Football, but instead of tackling the person with the ball you just need to grab one of the flags hanging on either side of their waist. Bring an extra pair of long socks (to serve as flags) if you want to play. Here are pictures from last time. If you have any questions email Marc at marc.reevenewson[AT]gmail.com. Feel free to bring friends.

Katsuragi park is in Kasuga, north-west of the intersection of Kita Odori and Nishi Odori. From the intersection of Kita and Nishi go west one set of lights (to the 7-11) and turn right (so you're going north), take your second left and you'll see the park on your right.

New University “Re-Use” System

Hi Everyone,

Are you moving house or upgrading your appliances?

A new "Re-use" system has been developed by the Tsukuba University "Environmental Circle EcoRanger" (official student body, supported by University of Tsukuba office - campus life section), so that new students coming to Tsukuba can live economically and ecologically.

If you have appliances and household goods that you don't need, please bring them to Ichinoya or Hirasuna dormitories in Tsukuba University on the following dates. They can also pick up your goods by car if necessary.

I think its a great idea, as every year there is always SO much stuff dumped at the dormitories that goes to waste. So, why not organise your things in March and give the things that you don't need to the new students.

Details

Household goods accepted:
Microwave oven, rice cooker, toaster oven, electrical appliances, TV, electric heater, desk lamp, etc. Only household goods in GOOD condition are accepted. Otherwise, they may reject your goods. Also, bicycles are accepted only with applicant's copy of "Bicycle Theft Prevention Registration".

Date, time, and location of receipt of goods:
3rd, 10th, & 25th March (also 26th & 27th March in Hirasuna)
9:00-11:30am, 13:00-15:30pm
Ichinoya and Hirasuna community bulidings (1Floor)
